Building investment opportunities in post conflict Colombia

Colombia counts, indeed, with diverse assets in the field of business such as its geographical location, with an outlet to both Pacific and Atlantic oceans, its natural resources, its biodiversity, its agroindustrial potential due to its condition of tropical country with different thermal levels, free trade agreements with Europe, the United States, South Korea and the countries of the American Pacific, and advantageous production costs, among others. On the other hand, according to World Bank’s Doing Business 2015, Colombia is the tenth country in the world and the first in Latin America in terms of investors´ protection degree.

Companies, as other actors do, are required to have sensitiveness to the conflict, this is, to be sensitive to the fact that they operating in a context with a violent past and of extreme complexity in the reconstruction phase. Indeed, in these transitional contexts, the private sector, through national and international agencies, can provide products and services aimed at the country’s reconstruction in accordance with some pre-established priorities and timetables and a national level strategy very relevant at macro-economic level. However, the challenge lies on the need that the “what” and “how” of the investment also responds to the post-conflict complexity and considers certain groups (victims, demobilized, displaced) as potential actors for the country’s economical reconstruction and reconciliation.

In this new scenario it is essential that the companies adapt themselves to an environment with new challenges and complexities by establishing inclusive relationships with all stakeholders and generating public-private partnerships that foster co-innovation processes. Companies can thus consider as opportunity the challenges (human, economical, technological, environmental, etc.) that arise in the immediate environment of their investment strategy.
